My CrossFit Story: Jess Perry
CrossFit has truly changed my life in so many different ways. I was a three sport athlete through high school and enjoyed the competitive aspect of these sports very much. After football, wrestling, and track were out of my life, I fell into the boring globo gym routine. This consisted of forcing myself to do some sort of cardio for twenty minutes if I was lucky, then do curls and bench press for an hour. At this point my diet was NOT even close to healthy and I quickly gained weight.
At one point, I saw an old college friend had started doing CrossFit and after typing CrossFit into Google, I walked into CrossFit St. Paul. I remember the Free Intro “workout” made me want to die and I thought to myself, you’re fat and you need to join this gym now. I absolutely love the community and the group environment; I remember getting my ass handed to me early on and it’s a thrill to be able to catch up to some of my classmates. Although, I still get my ass handed to me on a daily basis and there are still movements that I am terrible at. As I get stronger and faster, the workouts actually get much harder and I can’t get enough! I truly believe that I am addicted to this stuff and plan to stay as long as humanly possible. The improvement and progression you see in yourself is astonishing.
CrossFit St. Paul hosted a Nutrition Challenge a while back and it totally changed the way I felt during workouts. I’ve changed my diet significantly since then and my workouts continue to improve. I enjoyed getting to the point of buying all new dress clothes for work because I was swimming in my old ones (I’ve still got a long way to go).
Since I have started CrossFit, so many things have improved in my life. My career has continued to improve drastically, my sleep is better, I eat better, I feel better, and I know I’m a better husband to my wife and a better father to my daughter. My wife Kelly also does CrossFit with me and actually had a great experience continuing to workout while pregnant with our first child. I’m convinced that it helped her mentally and physically before and after the birth of our amazing daughter.
This isn’t just a tough workout to shed a few pounds before you drag your fat ass on vacation. CrossFit is a lifestyle that should be taken seriously and respected. Thank you to our owners and our amazing coaches for putting up with us! CrossFit St. Paul has something special and I’m lucky to be a part of it.
