Mark Sisson discusses the Semmelweis Reflex, which nicely explains what sometimes happens when the conventional wisdom of the day in the medical field is challenged.
The threat of questioning authority and compromising professional reputations was finally too much to swallow. Semmelweis’s findings not only diminished the stature of the hospital administration, it brought down to earth the position – and astuteness – of physicians themselves. History has frequently revealed a sacrificial pattern when one person’s discovery takes on accepted wisdom. In short, it’s a game of kill the messenger.
This story is relevant to a report that was on ABC News last night regarding a study of overweight people with high blood pressure. One group was prescribed the DASH diet, which recommends very little low fat meat and dairy products, fruits & vegetables, and whole grains, along with exercise. Another group did the DASH diet alone, and the third group made no diet changes and didn’t exercises. Not surprisingly, the first group lost weight and showed increased brain function.
Many people would interpret these results by saying a high carb, low fat diet will cause weight loss and improved brain function, while those of us who believe in an ancestral diet of high protein, low carb, and high fat would say that this study proves nothing and increasing exercise and reducing calories alone are likely what caused improve health for these people. This high carb, low fat diet is what is still the most commonly recommended diet by physicians to people with metabolic disorders. So what is someone who is shifting towards a Paleo/Primal type diet to do? Arming yourself with information and letting your individual health do the talking are the best ways to combat conventional wisdom in this case, although it’s always going to be a difficult battle when this kind of stuff is on the nightly news every other week.
Oh and here’s a few dietary recommendations of the DASH diet that are my favorites, yay we can add more pasta & graham crackers to our diets!
